Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin has been appointed a member of the 2015 Steering Committee of the National League of Cities (NLC) University Communities Council.

The University Communities Council is made up of local leaders from communities where a university is a dominate factor, and provides input and guidance to ensure that the needs and interests of municipal officials from university communities are included in NLC programs and services.

The appointment was announced by NLC President Ralph Becker, Mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah.

“The University Communities Council provides an important voice for the nation’s cities and towns where colleges and universities are central to the community,” Clarence Anthony, CEO & Executive Director of the National League of Cities, said.

Arkansas State University Chancellor Dr. Tim Hudson said the choice was a good decision.

“Mayor Harold Perrin is an exemplary choice to serve on the National League of Cities University Communities Council. He not only understands the impact a university has on the wider community in terms of economic development, he works collaboratively and tirelessly to make sure that the special needs of the university population and the unique quality of life attributes that a university contributes to a community are acknowledged and considered in all actions taken by civic leaders,” Hudson said.

As a member of the University Communities Council, Perrin will play a role in informing NLC’s policy positions and advocating on behalf of America’s cities and towns before Congress, with the Administration and at home. Issues covered by the council include economic development, transportation and infrastructure, sustainability, noise and other nuisances, housing and neighborhood concerns and partnerships between the university and the city or town.

“I am excited to be a member of this committee that will be reviewing best practices concerning the partnership between cities and universities. I’m extremely proud that the City of Jonesboro and Arkansas State University has a great ‘Town and Gown’ relationship,” Perrin said.
