Rosalind Brewer will serve as co-chair of the influential Northwest Arkansas Council. The announcement was made today at the Council’s annual meeting in Bentonville.

Brewer is president and CEO of Sam’s Club. She joined Walmart in 2006 as a regional vice president and was promoted several times, eventually becoming the leader of the company’s Sam’s Club division in 2012.

She takes over the Northwest Arkansas Council position for Mark Simmons, who has served as the Council’s presiding co-chair since June 2013. Simmons, one of the Council’s founding members, is chairman of Simmons Foods in Siloam Springs.

The Council, which was established in 1990, is a private, non-profit organization that works to push regional business and quality of life issues.

Past presiding co-chairs include founding chair Alice Walton, former Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott, Wal-Mart heir and Arvest Bank Chairman Jim Walton, former J.B. Hunt CEO Kirk Thompson, Tyson Foods Chairman John Tyson, and former Third District Cong. John Paul Hammerschmidt.
