Murphy Oil Corp. announced Monday (May 6) that its President and CEO Steve Cossé intends to step down from his post later this year after a spin-off of the company’s downstream operations.

The Murphy Oil board of directors said Roger Jenkins will succeed Cossé as President and CEO. Jenkins is currently serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

He joined Murphy Oil in 2001 and has held posts that include stints in exploration and production.

Prior to joining Murphy Oil, Jenkins spent 17 years with another major oil company. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University and an MBA from Tulane University and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Cossé was appointed President and CEO on June 20, 2012. He will continue to serve on the company’s board of directors.

Murphy Oil announced last year that the El Dorado-based oil and gas company would spin off its refinery and retail operations and become a pure play exploration and production firm. The exploration and production company will remain Murphy Oil Corp., while the retail and refinery group will be come an independent publicly traded company known as Murphy Oil USA. The transaction is expected to be completed later this year.

“We are grateful to Steve for guiding Murphy through this period of transition and are pleased to have Roger Jenkins on board to lead Murphy as it launches a new phase as an independent exploration and production company,” said Claiborne Deming, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Murphy Oil. Deming is a former CEO of the company.
