Rep. Ann Clemmer (R-Benton) and Rep. Reginald Murdock (D-Marianna) appeared on Sunday’s edition of Talk Business Arkansas.

The two House leaders discussed the politics surrounding the pro-life/pro-choice legislation at the state capitol as well as elements of health care reform that state lawmakers are grappling with.

Clemmer said she feels that the 12-week ban on abortions passed in SB 134, the “fetal heartbeat” bill, needs vetting in the federal courts as does the previously passed 20-week “pain capable” law. She cited an Arizona ruling that upheld a similar law and an Idaho court decision that struck down that state’s 20-week ban on abortions.

“Somebody’s got to settle it – which circuit, which federal circuit court is correct,” Clemmer said. “Roe v. Wade was written in 1973 before there was an active use of ultrasounds, before we had advertised pregnancy tests at home.”

Murdock said the pro-life, pro-choice debate is complicated. It affects moral and constitutional decisions.

“I don’t think because you believe in choice you’re not pro-life,” Murdock said. “I think that’s a myth.”
