It’s no secret 2012 was an up-and-down year for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., but the retailing giant that drives so much of Northwest Arkansas’ economy still earned a blue ribbon from the folks at Fortune magazine.

More specifically, Wal-Mart was one of 27 companies to earn the mag’s “Blue Ribbon” status, meaning it appeared on at least four of Fortune’s annual lists within the same calendar year. The lists are the Fortune 500, Global 500, World’s Most Admired Companies, 100 Best Companies to Work For, 100 Fastest-Growing Companies and CNNMoney’s 100 Most Desirable MBA Employers.

Note: For the Most Admired list, a company must appear either on World’s Most Admired Companies Top 50 overall, or rank in the top half of its industry to count toward inclusion on the Blue Ribbon list. Wal-Mart ranked among general merchandisers on the Most Admired list.

It also ranked second on the Fortune 500, third on the Global 500 and, and 83rd on the 100 Top MBA Employers lists.
