Local artists featured at Van Buren exhibition
Art lovers gathered at the Center for Art and Education on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 8) for the opening reception of the exhibition “Places in Space: The Impressions of Three Women Artists.” The exhibition included works by featured artist Linda Palmer, as well as local artists Martha Efurd and Maggie Malloy.
Featured artist Linda Palmer displayed a number of pieces highlighting her travels to Italy and France, as well as landscapes found throughout Arkansas. Palmer, whose studio is in Hot Springs, is known throughout the state for her unique work with different mediums. Her collection included oil paintings and pencil drawings showcasing classic architecture and unique sites found in nature.
In the downstairs gallery, works by Malloy and Efurd were on display. Malloy’s collection included several oil-based paintings such as her abstract pieces “Kaleidoscope” and “Beginnings.” Originally from Wewoka, Okla., Malloy has called Fort Smith home for more than 35 years. Many of her paintings feature bold colors and patterns, while others capture simple scenes from everyday life.
Many of Efurd’s pieces were inspired by her 2009 trip to Europe. Scenes from her extensive travels abroad can be seen in much of her work, as can her love for the natural landscapes of the Ozarks and surrounding area. In explaining her love of art, she notes that her inspiration comes from “God’s work in nature and anything showing character through living.”
At the reception, guests were treated to refreshments and were given an opportunity to visit with each of the featured artists. Entertainment was provided by Andy Lockhart, who played songs on the piano for guests in the upstairs gallery.
Visitors funneled in and out of the center throughout the afternoon. Several volunteers and board members were also on-hand at the reception to greet guests and enjoy the show.
Work from all three artists will be on display at the center through Jan. 27. The Center for Art and Education is located at 104 N. 13th St., in Van Buren, and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
