Van Buren, Lavaca awarded fire department grant funds

The city of Van Buren received $125,876 in fire department grant money from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, according to statements from members of Arkansas’ Congressional delegation.

Receiving $55,216 in grant funds was the Big Creek rural fire department near Lavaca.

Arkansas fire departments received a total of $894,718 in federal grants through the AFG program. All awards were made through the AFG’s Vehicle Acquisition and Operations and Safety Program Areas.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program is intended to enhance first responders’ ability to protect the health and safety of the public. AFG grants are awarded to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities. In addition, funds will go toward fire trucks, ambulances and other supporting vehicles and equipment.
