Hickory, N.C.-based Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co. is adding production and about 35 new jobs to its Fort Smith operations, according to Ray Gosack, Fort Smith deputy city administrator.

The information was presented to the Fort Smith Board of Directors Tuesday night (Dec. 2) because the company is applying for a tax rebate program that reduces the cost of equipment purchased for the plant expansion. The application requires approval of the local municipal board.

No one from Hickory Springs nor the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce was at the meeting. The City Wire will attempt to seek more details on the new jobs.

“This will be a small investment for the creation of about 35 new jobs and it is a bit of good news for the economy,” Gosack said.

Gosack’s “good news” reference was to the fact that more than 1,200 jobs cuts have been announced or implemented in the area in the past 60 days.
