Credit Unions Gain Assets, Lose Members

Arkansas Best Federal Credit Union in Fort Smith saw its assets climb 40.6 percent from $83.9 million in 2006 to $87.4 million at the end of 2007. The organization, which has 15,159 members, is the largest credit union by assets in the state’s six-county Northwest corridor.
Ranked No. 2, the University of Arkansas Federal Credit Union in Fayetteville checked in with $31.3 million in assets, down more than 4 percent.
For the Northwest Arkansas market, the 10 credit unions saw their collective assets gain about 1.3 percent from $167.9 million as of Dec. 31, 2006, to $170.1 million as of Dec. 31, 2007. Their combined membership was down about 1.4 percent from 41,036 to 40,423.
