St. Edward Mercy Medical Center has opened its newborn intensive care unit in late November.
Rather than transferring at-risk newborns to other facilities such as Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, St. Edward Mercy will be able to take care of most babies. Only newborns with severe respiratory distress, heart problems or requiring surgery will need to transfer out-of-area.
“The newborn intensive care unit will allow St. Edward Mercy to provide specialized services to infants in need of critical care,” said Dr. Larry Pearce, vice president of medical affairs. “Families, especially mothers and their newborns, will be able to stay together to receive the care they need.”
The NICU is located within the Hennessy Nursery.
Along with a new facility and new equipment, St. Edward Mercy has recruited neonatologist Victor Coloso who will serve as medical director for neonatology.
Coloso has been in private practice in Martin County and Palm Beach, Florida. He completed his pediatrics residency at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J., and his neonatology fellowship at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital.
