There’s a thrifty treasure hiding next to the Electric Cowboy in the Westwood Shopping Center in Fayetteville. Mexico Viejo gives lunch goers the essentials: fast, friendly food at an affordable price with the space to talk business if necessary.r

We took the line at the door as a sign that this place was a popular lunch spot for many a Fayettevillian. We chose the smoking section, where no one was smoking, and were seated immediately. The bright green stucco walls were cheery against the red countertops.r

Our server greeted us promptly, took our drink orders and asked if we were ready to order our meals. We weren’t, so we asked for a minute to ponder the menu. Salsa and freshly fried tortilla chips arrived about that time. The salsa was mild but good, making it easy to wolf down chips like a leaf blower jammed in reverse.r

When we looked up again, our server had returned and apparently figured the extra two minutes was plenty of time for us to decide what we wanted for lunch.r

One diner ordered the Speedy Gonzalez ($3.79) which came with one taco, one enchilada and a choice of rice or beans. This diner opted for the chicken taco, the beef enchilada and the rice. She said the rice was fluffy and taco shell deep fried and crunchy. The white cheese on top of the taco was tasty, and the chicken was tender and flavorful. The enchilada met expectations, and the red sauce on top was mild.r

The second diner ordered the fajitas ($5.79) with marinated chicken breast and skirt steak. The dish was served with sautéed onions and bell peppers and garnished with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo and corn or flour tortillas.r

The diner who had the fajitas said they were good but not the best he’s had in Fayetteville. There was enough chicken to fill two tortillas and enough beef for one.r

Other lunch specials included huevos rancheros ($4.29), fajita taco salad ($5) and three different combinations including tacos, enchiladas and burritos.r

For dessert, we split an order of flan ($1.80). The custard was good but, once again, nothing to write home to Juarez about.r

All in all, we think Mexico Viejo provides good food, especially for such reasonable prices. r
