KFSM Launches Spanish Newscast
KFSM, Channel 5, launched a 30-minute, Spanish-language newscast on June 30 from its Fayetteville newsroom. The newscast is aired Monday through Friday at 9 p.m. on Channel 16 on Cox Cable and repeated at 11:05 p.m.
Sylvan Solloway, formerly a reporter for the television station, is serving as anchor and producer of “Noticias 5 en Español.”
Solloway said she had been lobbying for the Spanish-language newscast for a year and a half. She takes some of the news stories that appear on the 6 p.m. English-language newscast and reads them in Spanish for the 9 p.m. show. Reporters also do stories, interviews and features specifically for the Spanish-language newscast. It is heavy on local news but also contains national stories.
The staff of “Noticias 5 en Español” includes weatherman Garrett Lewis, sports anchor Gustavo Peña and reporter Abby Ross — all speaking Spanish.
Solloway said the station is selling advertising for the Spanish-language newscast.
Channel 16, also known as NewsChannel 5, airs KFSM newscasts repeatedly throughout the day.
