Bentonville

During a trip to Bentonville Meat & Seafood Co., three of us came to the same conclusion: There’s probably not a better, more reasonably priced lunch in as clean of a restaurant in all of Northwest Arkansas.

A guest diner in our crowd had the special of the day, a French Dip sandwich ($5) served with au jus. It was rare, in both taste and quality.

“A good vet could put this back on its feet,” said our guest of his meal. “But it was very good. And the au jus was hot.”

Another diner had the Square ($6), a triple-decker club sandwich that was almost too pretty to eat. But he did. It had ham, turkey, American cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato stacked so high, this large fellow could barely get his mouth around it. But he managed.

“That, boys, was as good as a club sandwich as I’ve ever had,” he said, shortly after devouring the final crumb of bread. “Usually, a club sandwich is a club sandwich, but you can tell they don’t prefab their food.”

Another reviewer ordered The Rebel ($5), a bag of Lays Potato Chips and a can of iced tea. He said the meatloaf sandwich, topped with mustard, ketchup and cheese, could inspire one to charge over to the Bentonville square and salute the Confederate soldier memorial.

Some of the other sandwich menu items include names such as the City Hall, Mayor, Chamber, Courthouse, Five & Dime, Lawyer and Tiger. The cheapest item on the menu is the Daily Record ($4), the name of the Bentonville-based newspaper. It is a tuna salad sandwich.

All of our diners were enamored with the restaurant’s selection of choice cuts of meat.

We reviewed the fresh meats and seafood such as the thick-cut ribeyes, lamb chops and a seemingly endless seafood selection.

We were told there is a rotation of about 30 different seafoods, including some of the largest shrimp we had ever seen. There was also yellow fin tuna, salmon, amber jack, orange roughy, sea bass, trout, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, African perch, oysters and crabs.

Bentonville Meat & Seafood Co. will cook the food in advance for party trays, lunch boxes or catering. Much of the costs depend on daily market prices.

There is also a large selection of cookbooks, marinades and cheeses.

“The place was kind of neat,” our guest said. “It was unique because of the variety you have in the place, from seafood to wild turkey marinade. And you can watch the people cut the meat in the back.”

If cleanliness is next to Godliness, this is one heavenly business.
