The Dickson Street Diner Earns Three Stars

We know that a 24-hour diner located across the street from George’s Majestic Lounge probably wasn’t opened to specifically target business lunchers, but our office employees tend to have a soft-spot for short-order cooking. So, we recently ventured into The Dickson Street Diner in Fayetteville to satisfy our unhealthy cravings.
Painted with the perfect color of diner-yellow, the 25-table dining area is comfortable with a nice afternoon view of passing pedestrians.
Two folks in our party of four went for the plate-lunch special of the day ($6), which featured pork pot roast with green beans and a new potato, a tomato-cucumber salad and a roll.
Both enjoyed the roast and green beans. The fellow said it reminded him of the Dixie Cafe’s roast, and the woman said it made her miss Sunday dinners in south Arkansas.
They agreed that the tomato-cucumber salad was too tangy for the meal.
She also enjoyed a side of the homemade mashed potatoes and white gravy ($1). Skins on, the taters made her meal.
Another diner had the double cheeseburger with all the trimmings ($3), and he subbed a side order of french fries ($1) for the complimentary potato chips.
Happily, he smashed the burger down with his hand to make it thin enough to fit in his mouth.
“The burger was delicious and the fries were decent,” he said.
Our fourth attendee opted for the fried chicken platter ($6) with sides of macaroni and cheese and fries.
The chicken delivered more batter than meat, even with three pieces on the plate. Her fried potatoes seemed overcooked, too.
However, she proclaimed the ambrosial macaroni and cheese to be the best she’s had in an Arkansas restaurant.
On our next trip, we plan to sample one of the served-all-day breakfast options. Belgian waffles ($3.50) or eggs and country-fried steak ($6) might hit the spot. Light menu options seemed scarce, but a veggie submarine sandwich ($4.25) or a bagel with cream cheese ($2) would do in a pinch.
Stuffed with our respective choices, we all foraged forth to sample the homemade pies.
We recommend the apple and pecan slices, a la mode, of course. We’d never pass up homemade decadence. Be sure and ask for the pecan pie to be heated, so that the ice cream deliciously blends with its fantastic filling.
One thing to consider when planning an outing to the diner, don’t wear your best suit to this lunch. The Dickson Street Diner is purely casual, and the smell of good food will stay with your suit all the way back to the office.
