Bids for general contractors will be taken in September and October for the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville.

School officials hope the $4.6 million, 44,000-SF project will be completed by November 2002.

NWACC’s 17-acre campus is just east of Interstate 540 near the U.S. Highway 62 (and Arkansas Highway 102) exit. The new building will be on the northwest corner of the campus on East/West Eagle Way.

NWACC’s workforce development programs include marketing and enhancement of work skills.

Jack Shewmaker and family donated $1 million for the project, as did Wal-Mart associates and Sam’s Club associates. Other monies came from state funds and bond issues.

NWACC is already undergoing two expansion projects that will cost about $5.3 million. A 13,000-SF expansion of the north end of the campus will provide additional space for the business offices, institutional technology, art, music and graphic design departments. That project, at a cost of $1.6 million, is expected to be completed in time for the fall semester.

Oakridge Builders Inc. of Springdale is the general contractor. And a $4.2 million, 40,000-SF west end expansion will include additional space for the science laboratories, allied health, distance learning program and criminal justice departments. Pat and Willard Walker of Springdale donated $2 million toward the expansion. The west end expansion should be ready by spring 2003.
