Brand-name bargains base Stacey Shorb’s idea for a new business in Northwest Arkansas. Xtreme Outlet opened to offer a revolving stock of high-profile labels such as Nike, Reebok and Ralph Lauren at a lower price than any other discount store.
“This store will change every day,” Shorb said, “We want to keep our store fresh and new all the time.”
Shorb drops the traditional prices of the merchandise by purchasing export-intended truck loads of clothing, tools, appliances, toys and housewares.
A suit that would cost a customer $250 in a department store, Shorb said, would be reduced to $30 at Xtreme Outlet.
Using national brokers, Xtreme Outlet purchases cargo from trucks that were marked for export, Shorb said. Strict paperwork deadlines often prohibit the goods from leaving the country. When that happens, bargain hunters like Shorb buy the truck’s contents to sell at a discounted rate. However, Xtreme Outlet does not purchase goods from damaged trucks, as many other bargain outlets do.
Since opening the store, Shorb has bought loads from Macy’s department store, Toys “R” Us and Target Corp.
Shorb used about $150,000 to start the business and stock the 4,000-SF store. Each truck varies in value, but the Macy’s truck cost Xtreme Outlet $35,000.
Three people make up Shorb’s staff, and 16 years of retail experience helps Shorb run the store.
