Finance, Real Estate Popular With Women
Northwest Arkansas is home to about one-tenth of the state’s women-owned businesses, according to figures from the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
Statewide, the state had nearly 55,000 businesses owned by women during the last census. Of that total, Northwest Arkansas — or, more specifically, the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers metropolitan area — had 6,043 women-owned firms, 11 percent.
Sales from those businesses totaled $10.8 billion for the state, $399.4 million, or 3.7 percent, for the region.
Women-owned businesses employed 102,000 people in the state and 5,341 in the region.
The industry segment with the most women-owned firms in the region was finance, insurance and real estate, but only by a slim margin. About 12 percent of the businesses owned by women in that segment are in Northwest Arkansas, according to the census bureau.
But close behind are the services industry (11.9 percent); construction (11.2 percent); wholesale trade (10.4 percent); and agriculture/mining (10 percent). About 9.5 percent of the retail businesses are in the region.
