McGoverning the UA
George McGovern, the South Dakota senator who received the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 1972, will speak Oct. 23 or 24 at the dedication of the J. William Fulbright Memorial Peace Fountain at the University of Arkansas.
Bernard Madison, dean of the UA’s Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, says Randall Woods, UA distinguished professor of history, and another speaker will also be part of the program. President Bill Clinton was invited to participate in the program but will be unable to attend.
A 41-foot-tall, 11,000-pound bronze tower was erected Aug. 7 in the center of the fountain, which is located between Old Main and Vol Walker Hall on the UA campus. A life-sized statue of Fulbright will be placed near the fountain next year. Cost of the entire project is estimated at $900,000.
