The University of Arkansas’ animal science center under construction at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center on Garland Avenue in Fayetteville will be named for Pauline Whitaker of Rogers, who gave $500,000 toward the project.

The Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Center will be used for teaching, research and extension activities, says Keith Lusby, head of the UA’s animal science department.

Whitaker’s gift is part of the private contributions matching a $2 million U.S. Department of Agriculture grant sponsored by Sen. Dale Bumpers, D-Ark., for the project.

Matching funds were received by 75 donors. The UA already had $930,000 on hand from the Arkansas College Savings Bond program. Other major contributors include the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association, the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation and county farm bureaus, the Arkansas Pork Producers Association and livestock breed associations.

The 45,000-SF center is expected to be completed by November and will cost about $3.4 million.
