Medical device and diagnostics company SFC Fluidics Inc. of Fayetteville has been awarded a $1.5 million research grant to further develop its MD Analyzer, which monitors patients who suffer from severe traumatic brain injury. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

For various reasons, severe traumatic brain injury patients often have a limited ability to communicate with medical staff. This can lead to very rapid changes to the patients’ condition which go unnoticed and can lead to multiple organ failures and even death.

According to a news release from SFC Fluidics, the MD Analyzer will be located at a patient’s bedside, whereas current comparable tests require the use of large equipment located in a centralized laboratory. The MD Analyzer will deliver a diagnostic readout every 10 minutes, whereas results of traditional tests can take several hours to reach medical staff.

SFC Fluidics is also developing BioSmart, a 10-minute pinprick blood test that will provide a tool to triage patients suffering from concussion in the sports arena, on the battlefield or at the scene of an accident.
