Malone outpaces Campbell on campaign contributions (Correction)

Rep. Stephanie Malone has almost collected more in campaign funds from outside the Fort Smith area than Fort Smith City Director Gary Campbell has collected in total.

Malone and Campbell are hoping to win the GOP primary for the District 64 (Fort Smith) House seat. The primary winner will win the House seat because no Democrats filed for the general election race.

At the end of March, Malone, a first-term member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, reported collecting total contributions of $14,605, with $7,800 of that coming from individuals and political action committees outside the Fort Smith area. Malone has spent $6,154 on her campaign and ended March with a $8,451 balance.

Malone has received contributions from Rep. Frank Glidewell ($150) and Jim Medley ($100) who are two of three candidates — along with Jake Files — in the GOP primary for the District 13 Senate seat.

Campbell has raised $8,100, with just $400 of that coming from individuals and PACs outside the Fort Smith area. He has spent $4,806 on the campaign and ended March 31 with a $3,409 balance.

Campbell said he thinks it will take at least $17,000 to be competitive through to the May 18 primary election. Campbell said he thinks he’ll be able to raise enough money to be competitive.

“Based on most recent contacts, I expect my expenses will be covered by cash in hand and commitments,” he said.

Malone declined to provide an exact amount.

“Money isn’t the central focus of your race but I have raised enough to let the voters of District 64 know my conservative voting record,” Malone said in an e-mail note to The City Wire. “I have had overwhelmingly positive responses from people and I am excited for May 18th to get here.”
