Bentonville is in the midst of a restaurant and retail eruption.

The Pressroom and the Belfry are obvious headliners, but they are not the only ones. Whispers hears Onyx Coffee Lab and Austin, Texas-based Backwoods outfitters will soon be announced as tenants in the new Midtown Center.

And from what Whispers hears, lease negotiations are underway for at least three more tenants in the office/retail complex.

Whispers also hears the next tenant to move into the old Pressroom site on Central Avenue will be a restaurant.

But a couple of intriguing questions remain unanswered. Who will move into the Central Avenue location recently vacated by The Mustache Goods and Wears? And what’s going on at the old Gene’s Barber Shop location on Central Avenue?

We’ll know soon enough.

Next month, a report on the feasibility of building a convention center in Bentonville will be issued. Do you really think the consultant will say Bentonville is not a good place to build?

As Bentonville surges, there’s a curious absence in the civic hierarchy. Downton Bentonville Inc. hasn’t had an executive director in nearly a year. Daniel Hintz announced his resignation in July 2013. His successor, David Deggs, resigned in May 2014 to accept a position as director of Adult & Community Education for the Fayetteville School District.
