Robotics Technology Improves Hip, Knee Surgeries at NW Medical Center
Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville recently began using robotics technology to aid in performing partial knee and total hip replacement procedures.
The technology incorporates a surgeon-controlled robotic arm and patented visualization system that enables accurate alignment and placement of implants, orthopedic surgeon Michael Maline said in a press release from the hospital.
“RIO [the robotic arm interactive orthopedic system] enables surgeons to personalize partial knee and total hip arthroplasties to achieve optimal results at a level of accuracy and reproducibility previously unattainable with conventional instrumentation,” Maline said.
Partial knee surgery is a less-invasive treatment option for osteoarthritis that has not yet spread to all three compartments of the knee. The precision granted by robotics technology allows the healthy bone and surrounding tissue to be left alone and helps achieve the correct depth and orientation in hip replacement surgery, according to the press release.
Northwest Medical Center is the first hospital in Northwest Arkansas to offer the new technology, according to the press release.
