The Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra has increased its season ticket sales by 50 percent this year.

It started humbly six years ago as the Civic Symphony of Benton County — some musicians played for free at first — but has enjoyed a steady rise of success since it rebranded itself in 2009. The name was changed and conductor Steven Byess, who has worked on Broadway and TV, stepped in.

The orchestra features more than 60 musicians and makes it a point to pool from local talent, including several department chairs from the University of Arkansas music program. It also aims to make its performances accessible and educational, with the conductor giving an explanation of the pieces prior to each performance.

“We like to call it music for everybody,” said Robbie Hubbard, personnel manager.

The upcoming Christmas performance, which will be 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Arend Arts Center in Bentonville, will feature collaborations with the UA Children’s Choir and Ozark Bronze Handbell Ensemble, in addition to Grammy Award-winning soprano Leona Mitchell, who spent 18 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The atmosphere is casual, and even small children are welcome to attend shows.
