Tyson: Plants Expansion Will Create Up to 200 Jobs

Springdale-based Tyson Foods Inc. has begun a multimillion-dollar improvement and expansion project at its poultry complex in Sedalia, Mo.
The company said in a news release the expansion will create as many as 200 jobs in the next two years. About 150 people will be hired between November and March, with another 50 people likely needed by mid-1014.
The plant complex currently employs about 1,450.
Improvements will include the addition of up to five deboning lines, upgrades to the plant’s wastewater treatment operations and unspecified improvements in the slaughter area.
“The improvements will help optimize the plant’s product mix for our customers and make it even more cost competitive,” Chris McMurrough, Tyson’s vice president of operations, said in the release.
The Sedalia poultry complex contracts with more than 125 poultry farmers in seven counties in central Missouri. Its operations include the processing plant, hatchery, feed mill, live haul operations, wastewater treatment facility and a rendering operation.
The plant makes fully cooked chicken products for grocery customers. The annual payroll for the complex in fiscal 2011 topped $46.3 million. Family farmers were paid about $27.4 million to grow chickens for the complex.
