No Rush in This Line

We hear Wal-Mart Stores Inc. continues to scout a location for the first Supercenter store in Centerton (now pop. 10,000-plus).

Well, sort of.

The location — near the corner of Arkansas Highway 102 and South Fish Hatchery Road between McDonald’s and the Stoneleigh Centerton apartment complex — already has been determined. That much we knew almost seven years ago, thanks to an item from an October 2005 issue of the Business Journal.

A news item at that time reported the plans to build a 184,000-SF Supercenter at that site.

Daphne Moore, then a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, said construction would begin “soon,” and be completed in 10 months.

The Centerton Planning Commission approved the store’s large-scale development plan in September 2005, the Business Journal reported, and Walmart had bought about 37 acres from Massey Holdings LLC for $3.15 million earlier that summer.

So where’s the store? Frankly, we’re not sure what derailed the original plan for a store opening in 2006.

We do know a source told us that while a trip to a Centerton Supercenter might still be at least 18 months away, there are rumblings that the project is inching back toward the front burner.
