In an interview, Bentonville mayor Bob McCaslin said he wouldn’t have any hard numbers on how Crystal Bridges had affected tourism in his town for a few months because hospitality tax totals run a couple of months behind.
His “just intuitive” feeling is a definite yes, the city has seen an increase in visitors. In walking around the town square recently, McCaslin said, he talked with a Massachusetts couple who had traveled to Bentonville to meet a sister from Texas for the express purpose of visiting the museum.
“It is growing beyond the region and we suspected that going in,” he said.
McCaslin expressed particular delight in Travel & Leisure magazine naming Bentonville one of the hottest travel destinations for 2012.
“That is probably one of the single best indicators of our future,” he said.
