Really, Reilly?

Now that college football season has arrived, the unending litany of preseason predictions can mercifully end.

Seemingly since the day after last year’s championship game was decided, the opinions.

Famed sportswriter Rick Reilly did, however, deliver something that stood out to the Whispers staff. In his commentary last week for ESPN.com, Reilly penned the following:

“Grub’s [Bar & Grille], the best college bar in America, will nearly come unhinged when Arkansas wins the BCS national championship over Oklahoma. It’s the first national title for Arkansas since 1964, when it went undefeated under Frank Broyles. (Yet Alabama, which lost its bowl game to Texas that year, still claims it as theirs. Whoa, Tide!) Anyway, chili cheese fries for everybody!”

Reilly no doubt has contributed to the unchecked optimism flowing through most Hog fans’ veins these days. His words also represented a nice shout-out for Grub’s, though there are probably a few establishments in the area – and certainly nationwide – that might beg to differ with Reilly’s proclamation.

Regardless, here’s hoping Reilly proves right. We here at Whispers haven’t been unhinged in a while.
