Tap Room Takes Timeout

Wanted: Someone to run one of Fayetteville’s most historic businesses.

OK, OK, Maxine’s Tap Room might not be on the National Register of Historic Places, but the thousands who have enjoyed a cold one there over the years no doubt would agree it’s worth saving. We bring this up only because the venerable watering hole, opened by Maxine Miller in 1950 and generally regarded as the longest-running female-owned business in Fayetteville, is opening its doors only on weekends these days.

It’s been that way since late September, and owner Andrea Foren said that won’t soon change. It seems decreased discretionary spending has taken its toll on Maxine’s.

With that in mind, and a full-time job with the City of Fayetteville, Foren is exploring the idea of leasing the space.

 “If I can find the right person who knows about Maxine’s and what it’s all about, I’d be willing to lease it,” Foren said.

Thankfully, Foren said she isn’t currently entertaining the idea of selling Maxine’s. The bar is closed for the holidays and will reopen on Jan. 8.
