The University of Arkansas had record enrollment for the fall 2009 semester, with an unofficial count of 19,849 students.

That represented a 3.4 percent increase over 2008’s enrollment, about 655 students.

Undergraduate enrollment was up nearly 3 percent to 15,835 students, and total graduate enrollment was up more than 7 percent to 3,616 students. Enrollment at the School of Law was unchanged at 398 students.

“Predicting enrollment numbers is always a daunting task,” Susan McCray, vice provost for enrollment management, said in a press release about the figures. “What we initially thought might only be a slight increase has turned into significant growth. We are very pleased by these record-breaking numbers.”

The UA said the increase was one of the largest one-year increase in enrollment in recent history.

In-state students were 69.5 percent of the total student body. Out-of-state enrollment was up nearly 10 percent and international student enrollment was up 11.5 percent.

Minorities make up more than 20 percent of the students on the Fayetteville campus.

Enrollment figures are not officially reported to the state until Oct. 17 and may vary slightly from those reported by the UA’s Sept. 11 count.
