“At the center of it all” is one of the slogans being used by operators of the newly opened Dickson Street Inn, and the phrase couldn’t be more apropos.
Wake up in one of the rooms, in fact, and the first thing you’ll see once the drapes are opened is Old Main rising in the distance. Once outside, you’re literally steps away from the hubbub of Dickson Street.
“We felt like there’s no accommodations right around here, and that this would be a popular notion,” co-owner Greg House said.
So far, so good. A group of business travelers and a large party of football fans made sure The Dickson Street Inn was packed in its first week.
The boutique hotel, with rooms ranging in price from $150 to $250 per night, is located in a remodeled Victorian Home originally built in 1894. A mixed-use property since House took ownership in 1983, the building has undergone extensive work in the last year as the hotel project took shape.
House said about $1 million was invested in the conversion, including all new wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and the installation of bathrooms in each guest room. The inn consists of eight guest rooms and two neighboring larger suites. Eight of the 10 rooms in the roughly 5,000-SF space have adjoining outside seating areas that increase the total space to about 8,000 SF.
Fronting The Dickson Street Inn is the Veranda Wine Bar, which is open to the public as well as guests. Seating is literally on the roof of Crown Pub, giving patrons a palpable taste of the Dickson Street atmosphere.
The bar serves an international selection of beer and wines, as well as an appetizer menu. Inside the hotel, amenities like wireless Internet access and cable TVs mesh with antique surroundings.
