Independence, Mo. wants Tyson back and they’re willing to pay for it. The city council approved nearly $800,000 in incentives to entice a subsidiary of Tyson Foods to reopen its abandoned plant.

Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson said Provemex, a subsidiary not currently in use, is looking at ways to use the plant.

The plant was closed in 2006 along with another nearby plant, costing about 400 jobs.

Mickelson said competitive reasons keep him from commenting on specific uses for the plant, including a local rumor that it will be used to manufacture pet food. City officials have been told the plant, if chosen, will be used for a completely new product line for the company. Tyson recently entered the pet food market.

Officials are hopeful that Tyson will choose the site, potentially bringing 150 new jobs to town.
