Rick Schaeffer Entertains Local Mortgage Bankers

The Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Arkansas holds a luncheon on the second Tuesday of every month for networking and educational purposes.

Its August gathering was an exception.

While there was still plenty of networking among the 59 who attended, the main attraction was Rick Schaeffer. Many Arkansans know Schaeffer as the Razorbacks’ former sports information director or as the co-host of “Drivetime Sports.”

r

At the luncheon, however, Schaeffer turned in an engaging performance as the featured attraction — equal parts comedian, historian and motivational speaker. Schaeffer delighted the crowd with humorous accounts of many things Razorback, both past and present.

r

He also urged those in attendance to keep “tough times” and a down economy in perspective. It’s easier to do that, Schaeffer said, when people come together for a cause, whether it be a religious or civic event, or just cheering for the Hogs.

r

“Where we live and the community we share — Northwest Arkansas, Arkansas, and the United States — is good,” Schaeffer said. “It’s real good, and that’s the way you ought to live every day.

r

“Being a part of a community is what life is all about.”

r

A quick survey showed representatives from about 10 area banks, as well as a handful of insurance agents, appraisers, etc. When it came to the most anticipated number of the day, though, Schaeffer wouldn’t be pinned down on Arkansas’ football season.

r

“I’ve gotten out of the prediction business,” he said with a laugh. “But I will tell you Arkansas will win its first game.”
