When asked about how U.K.-based Tesco’s Fresh & Easy concept was doing against Wal-Mart’s Marketside concept, Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman of Wal-Mart Stores’ U.S. division, said he only knew what the press reported in terms of the competition. Marketside is a convenience store concept being tested in Arizona and California.

The company continues to look at new concepts and store formats, but in the current market it is not accelerating those concepts, he said.

On June 10, the East Valley Tribune of Phoenix noted the company has added “by Walmart” and the company’s “spark” to new Marketside signage. Looks like Wal-Mart realizes it has some good equity in its own name as a low cost leader.
