Business Journal Flubs News? Suffix (opinion)

In our July 30 Outtakes item on Web traffic, The Morning News should have ranked tops among area media sites, according to Alexa.com.

Apparently while doing research on the item, we inadvertently typed “.com” as the suffix to the site instead of the paper’s preferred “.net” suffix – a boneheaded thing to do, but not uncommon we’re sure.

As of Aug. 7, the rank for nwaonline.net was 201,891. But the paper also owns the URL nwaonline.com, which immediately routes surfers to the same page as the “.net” suffix. The “.com” site ranked 3,212,003 on Aug. 7, below all others in the market.

We can’t help but notice this unique arrangement allows the News to simultaneously be first and last among Northwest Arkansas media Web sites.
