Barber?s Nashville Skyline Faces Fight

The proposed 10-story Divinity building on Fayetteville’s Dickson Street isn’t the only Barber Group building drawing fire from preservationists.

The Springdale-based developer is considering a 20-story hotel on Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville, Tenn. But preservationists say it could destroy the character of the area, which is sprinkled with honky-tonks and restaurants. The plan would include tearing down most of three buildings that face Broadway to make room for a hotel that would take up a half city block.

The hotel, which would probably be a Westin, would be the largest building in the Broadway Historic District, according to The Tennessean, Nashville’s daily newspaper.

The proposed building would be five times taller than any that are currently in the vicinity.

Barber is partnering with Denver-based Sage Hospitality Resources on the proposed project, according to The Tennessean.

On Broadway, the proposed building would rise no more than 42 feet, but 30 yards back from the street, it would be 220 feet tall.

The Barber Group’s Divinity Building has a similar design to minimize the height facing Dickson Street.

We sent Brandon Barber, chairman of The Barber Group, an e-mail asking about the Nashville building, but we didn’t receive a response from him.
