Huckabee, Daly Make Weighty TV Appearances

We were alternately amused and alarmed by the national television appearances of two Arkansas “ambassadors” within a week of each other.

On May 2, Gov. Mike Huckabee was a guest on Comedy Central’s fake news show, “The Colbert Report.” He plugged his new book, “Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork: A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle” and mostly let host Stephen Colbert poke fun at his significant weight loss.

“Now I’m a smaller target,” Huckabee joked.

On May 7, John Daly, the former golfer for the University of Arkansas who won the 1991 PGA championship, was a profile feature on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”

Daly also plugged his new book, “My Life in and out of the Rough: The Truth about all that Bull**** You Think You Know About Me.” He spoke openly about how he hates to exercise and practice.

According to the report, Daly consumes 20 Diet Cokes and two packs of cigarettes a day, along with copious amounts of beer. As if he were the anti-Huckabee, Daly said that if he looses too much weight, it throws off his golf swing.

We have to give Huckabee kudos for going into the line of comedic fire and Daly kudos for his candor on the premier television news show.

We just wish Daly’s excesses cast a slightly smaller shadow on the Natural State’s reputation.
