Vegrandis LLC, a Fayetteville company and a client of Virtual Incubation Corp., recently received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The grant, worth $225,000, is to continue the development of technology to detect pathogens in water, specifically Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia. This is the company’s tenth such award since April 2003. To date, the awards have totaled more than $3 million.

Vegrandis uses “microelectrochemical” technology to measure pathogens in small amounts of fluids.

VIC is a business incubator for companies that own innovative technology.

Calvin Goforth, president of VIC, said he is looking for at least six more SBIR grants to be awarded to his clients in the next few months.

Another client, Blue in Green LLC, is developing oxygenation and ozonation technology. Ozonation can be used to treat point sources of wastewater (like hospitals) to remove drug residue and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The company will be ready to unveil its first commercially available products at the Water Environment Federation trade show (WEFTEC) in October. The show is slated for Dallas.

“We think we’ll make a big splash at WEFTEC,” Goforth said.
