Brewer Starts UA Endowment

It seems that Clete Brewer had fallen off the edge of the Earth for a while. Clete and his father founded StaffMark Inc., the staffing company in Fayetteville that became Edgewater Inc. of Massachusetts. Clete Brewer was president and CEO of StaffMark/Edgewater from 1996 to 2002.

But since then, we haven’t heard a peep from Clete.

Then, on March 15, the University of Arkansas sent out a press release saying Clete and his wife Tammy Brewer of Rogers had established an endowed professorship in the Walton College of Business. The Brewers had given the UA $500,000, which was matched by the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation.

The press release said Brewer is president of Horizant Sports LLC and was recently named president of Sport Clips Inc. No further explanation was given.

We looked up Horizant with the Secretary of State’s office and noticed that it goes by the fictitious name Sport Clips. Sport Clips Inc. is a chain of sports-themed haircutting salons for men and boys with 320 stores in 28 states. It was founded in 1995 by Gordon Logan in Georgetown, Texas. Horizant Sports is apparently the LLC that owned the Sport Clips franchise at 2212 W. Walnut St. in Rogers.

A Feb. 14 press release on the Sport Clips Web site stated that Brewer, who is on the board of directors, had “made a substantial investment in Sport Clips as a minority shareholder.”

According to the press release, Brewer oversees the company’s marketing, operations, training and development functions. He previously served as Sport Clips area developer for Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southwest Missouri and west Texas.

Clete Brewer is also on the executive advisory board at the Walton College.
