New York & Co. plans to open a store this spring in a 7,973-SF space in Fayetteville’s Northwest Arkansas Mall.

“It’s one that people ask for a lot,” said Alice Church, the mall manager. “They’ve seen it in bigger cities, so I think it will be good for this area.”

Church said the contract was signed on Jan. 30. New York & Co. sells “fashion oriented, moderately priced” clothing for women, according to the company’s Web site.

Founded in 1918, New York & Co. has more than 500 stores in 45 states. This will be the company’s first store in Arkansas. New York & Co. has two stores in south Missouri, one in Joplin and one in Springfield.

New York & Co. had net sales of $1.04 billion in fiscal 2004, up 8.1 percent from $961.8 million the previous year.

The New York & Co. space in Fayetteville’s mall was previously home to three businesses — Structure, Zales and Salon Icon. Structure became Express Men and moved in with the Express Women store. Zales moved to a new location in the mall. And Salon Icon closed.

Also, the Victoria’s Secret store moved in late January to a temporary location near the Sears store while its regular 5,636-SF space is being renovated. Victoria’s Secret will move back into its original space in April, Church said.

Casual Corner Group closed its store in the Northwest Arkansas Mall on Jan. 31, leaving a 5,990-SF vacancy next to the original Victoria’s Secret location. Church said she doesn’t have a tenant for that space yet. Over the past few months, Casual Corner has closed several of its stores across the country.
