Sign Says New Orleans Wal-Mart Guarded by Dog

We were in New Orleans in late October and decided to see if the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Tchoupitoulas Street had reopened after Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent looting.

We pulled into the parking lot of what may be the most famous Wal-Mart in the world right now and saw a closed sign in the window. A sign next to it read “Beware of Dog,” but we didn’t see any dog.

We got out of the car to take a picture of the dog sign, and a man came running out of the store. He was wearing wrap-around sunglasses and a Captain Morgan Spiced Rum t-shirt. He looked more like a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd than a Wal-Mart security person.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he hollered. “No pictures. We’re instructed to tell people no pictures, especially the press.”

We walked over to the street, which is public property, and shot our photos from there instead.

Although you can’t see the dog sign from the street, we assume there’s one in there, slashing prices with canine incisors like a yellow smiley-faced TV commercial.
