Springdale Health & Rehab Center graduated from our Least Profitable Nursing Homes list this year into the black.

The change from a $279,637 net loss to $446,192 net income from June 2003 to June 2004 could be due to 10 percent increase in “census,” said Deanna Shackelford, administrator for the Springdale facility.

Shackelford joined Springdale Health & Rehab in July 2003 after working for Beverly Healthcare in Harrison. She said private-pay income wasn’t a huge factor in the bottom-line increase for the center, whose Medicaid utilization is about 60 percent.

“You can run more efficiently at 82 percent [occupancy] than 72 percent because the costs are more offset by a higher census,” Shackelford said.

Long-term residents make up the bulk of the center’s occupancy, with short-term residents accounting for about 25 percent, she said. The center has three full-time therapists on staff.

Net income for the most profitable nursing homes in the area remained about the same for the fiscal year ending June 2004. Net income totaled $2.59 million in 2004, which was a slight decrease from net income of $2.62 million in 2003. Revenues also increased by about $1 million year over year. This year’s list did not include financials from two facilities, whose numbers were not available.
