Morning News Headline Writers Grounded (Outtakes Opinion)

We noticed an interesting headline on the front page of the July 28 Fayetteville edition of The Morning News: “Space Shuttle Grounded.”

The space shuttle Discovery, however, was pretty far from Earth at that time. According to the Associated Press article in The Morning News, NASA is “grounding” future shuttle flights until problems with foam debris can be fixed (although NASA didn’t use the word “grounded”).

Two days earlier, the main headline across the top of Page 1 in The Morning News’ Fayetteville edition read: “Democrats Dealt Warning on Rogers.”

The warning didn’t have anything to do with the city in Benton County. That AP story concerned Supreme Court nominee John Roberts. We suspect The Morning News headline writers are so used to writing Rogers that they couldn’t help themselves.

We know how it is on deadline, though. The Northwest Arkansas Business Journal reported in its July 18 issue that a golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 20 at The Blessing golf course in Johnson would cost $36,000 for a two-person team or $17,500 per player. The actual cost is $35,000 per two-person team.
