Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe announced Tuesday (Jan. 19) he will seek reelection in the 2010 general election. A formal announcement has not yet been scheduled, according to a campaign announcement.

“While I plan to kick off my campaign, officially, in the upcoming months, for now we must begin organizing for the task ahead,” Beebe said in a campaign e-mail.

Beebe, a Democrat, is the only declared candidate for Governor. He was first elected to the position in 2006. The Republican Party of Arkansas will have to field a nominee for the post to remain recognized as an official political party under state law, noted this report from Roby Brock at TalkBusiness.net.

In response to Beebe’s announcement, state GOP Chairman Doyle Webb said, “There are many issues facing Arkansans today and we anticipate a vigorous campaign to address such concerns as job creation, taxes and spending priorities. We are confident the Republican Party of Arkansas will produce a conservative candidate dedicated to addressing these issues along with numerous others.”
