We were amused to see the following headlines from the wire services on April 13:

“Retail Data Gets a Boost from Car, Gasoline Sales” — from The Wall Street Journal online.

“Retail Sales Hurt by Rising Gas Costs” — from The Associated Press.

Both stories were based on the same data from the Commerce Department. Retail sales rose 0.3 percent in March but were actually down 0.1 percent when automobiles and gasoline were taken out of the equation.
