Fayetteville’s Athletic World Advertising broke its one-day record on Jan. 3 with sales of more than $424,000, said Gregg Ogden, AWA’s founder and president.

The first business day of the year is typically the best for AWA, which is the nation’s largest sports schedule poster company. Last year, AWA sold more than $360,000 worth of advertising on the first business day of the year, Ogden said.

With the new year, the company’s sales team begins calling potential advertisers for the fall football season.

Ogden wouldn’t reveal revenue numbers, but he said sales increased 15 percent and profit was up 35 percent in 2004.

Pocket schedules provided a big sales boost, Ogden said. AWA began testing pocket schedules in 2002 and started printing them on a regular basis in 2003. Last year, sales jumped 300 percent with more than 9,500 advertisers for the pocket schedules.

“We printed 10 million of those little cards last year,” Ogden said.
