The Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation announced a number of grant awards in the final weeks of 2004.

The foundation, a public charity formed in 1999 and serving four counties, awarded 56 unrestricted grants for a total of $54,726, and also awarded another $10,000 to seven different nonprofits in December.

NWACF’s award of 56 grants went to the organizations for unrestricted funding. According to a news release about the grant awards, the funding for the unrestricted grants came from personal donations to the foundation by board members and supporters.

This is the second year NWACF has awarded grants at the end of the year to a variety of nonprofits for unrestricted use. The grants last year went to 59 organizations and totaled nearly $4,000 more than this year’s total.

Northwest Arkansas Head Start was among the grant recipients, receiving $2,151 to purchase three Learning Accomplishment Profile-Diagnostic Edition kits, a standardized assessment instrument for children 30-72 months old. The agency provides comprehensive child development programming for 504 children of lower income families in a three-county area.

The additional $10,000 awarded in December by NWACF was funded through the foundation’s Cheers for Children Fund, which funds organizations dealing with child abuse and neglect.

The grants included $2,000 grants to Our Farm Inc., Children’s Safety Center and The Beau Foundation for prenatal services for the uninsured. An additional $1,000 each went to the Benton County Women’s Shelter, the Economic Opportunity Agency’s Children’s House, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter and Restoration Ministries Children’s Advocacy Center.
