Charles Maxwell, professor of swine nutrition in the University of Arkansas’ Department of Animal Science was recently awarded the 2004 Alltech Medal of Excellence at the 20th International Feed Industry Symposium in Lexington, Ky.

Maxwell is the 14th recipient of the award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium for the professor. Alltech of Lexington, Ky., Maxwell said, is a biotechnology firm that does research to advance biotech products that enhance feed performance worldwide. Maxwell won for research of a yeast-cell wall product that the UA proved was able to enhance the performance and immune functions of young pigs.

The UA program has about 140 sows that produce a little more than 2,000 pigs per year that are sold to the highest bidder, Maxwell said.
