J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville and Acxicom Corp. of Little Rock were named in Computerworld magazine’s June 14 issue that ranked the top 100 best companies to work for in information technology.

J.B. Hunt was the best Arkansas performer, ranking fourth out of the 100 nationally, with Wal-Mart coming in at 29 and Acxiom at 43.

When the three companies were broken out into the 12-state south-central region and compared with the likes of FedEx Corp. (5) of Memphis, AFLAC Inc. (3) of Columbus Ga., and Regions Financial Corp. (6) of Birmingham, Ala., they ranked No. 2, No. 4 and No. 7 respectively.

In real numbers, Wal-Mart scored better than its Arkansas peers on both the female and minority fronts. The retailer employs seven times more IT pros than J.B. Hunt and only 267 more people than Acxiom, yet had 24 percent female managers and 14 percent minority managers (see chart).

Computerworld accepted nominations of public and private companies with a minimum 2003 revenue of $250 million, 500 total employees and at least 100 U.S. IT employees.
