Katherine Shurlds, a University of Arkansas journalism instructor, has been named president of the Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Jeff Smith and Jeff Niese, both reporters with The Morning News, will serve as vice president and secretary/treasurer, respectively. Michelle Parks and Melinda Rogers, both with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, were named membership and information officers, respectively. Smith served as president of the organization for the first half of 2004.

The new officers will serve in those positions for the next year.

This fall, SPJ plans to resurrect the Northwest Arkansas Gridiron Show, which lambasts local politicians and other newsmakers. The show will be presented at the Victory Theater in Rogers on Oct. 1 and 2.

SPJ is joining with its partners, the Fayetteville branch of the American Association of University Women and the Rogers Little Theater, to produce the show, which will be written, directed and performed by local journalists.
